MANKATO, Minn. -- Northwestern College cruised to its seventh UMAC victory over Bethany Lutheran College on Thursday afternoon, winning 9-0.
NWC took all three doubles matches, losing just two games between the three sets. Eagles head coach John Sanny mixed things up a bit for his lineup, putting
Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) and
Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) together at No. 1 doubles, giving
David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) the day off. Kauss and Blancke defeated the Vikings' David Blumer and Ryan Koch 8-1, while
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and
Philip Gudim (Becker, Minn./Home School) handed Eric DeBruzzi and Aaron Wiechmann an 8-0 sweep at No. 2 doubles. Finally,
Collin Henslee (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Christian) and
Levi Busse (Amery, Wis./Amery) wrapped up doubles play with an 8-1 victory at the No. 3 position.
Kauss played up at No. 1 singles, having no issues against Blumer which was evidenced by a 6-0, 6-0 win for the senior. Blancke then defeated Koch 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles before Mila won his No. 3 singles match against DeBruzzi 6-1, 6-2. Gudim, Henslee and
Brandon Terpsma (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Christian) all won their singles matches as well, with none of them giving up more than two games in a set.
Now 11-9 overall and 7-1 in conference action, the Eagles will get a rematch against their UMAC foe, the College of St. Scholastica, on Saturday in Duluth. The Saints won the first meeting between the two teams, 6-3. An Eagles win would almost guarantee them a share of the league title while a St. Scholastica win would give the Saints the UMAC crown outright. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
