MORRIS, Minn. -- After a postponement because of rain a few weeks ago, the Northwestern College women's tennis team just barely earned the “W” in their meet versus the University of Minnesota-Morris Wednesday afternoon. Northwestern won the meet 5-4.
The only doubles team to earn a win was the No. 2 doubles combo of
Amy Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) who defeated their Cougar opponents 8-5.
In singles action, four of the six Northwestern players were able to win their matches to give them the one extra win they needed in order to win the match.
Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and
Leah Hogle (Grundy Center, Iowa/Grundy-Center), Northwestern's No. 2 and No. 6 singles players, both defeated their opponents 6-3, 6-3. Knight, Northwestern's No. 3 singles player, and
Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji), Northwestern's No. 4 singles player, were able to breeze by their opponents securing a 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively.
With only a day to recuperate, the women's tennis team, now 9-11 will head to Mankato, Minn. Thursday to take on Bethany Lutheran College at 3 p.m. and hit the road once again as they take on their archrivals, St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.
