FRIDLEY, Minn. – The Northwestern College men's tennis team resumed its recent winning ways on Friday, defeating Saint Mary's University 7-2 at Lifetime Fitness.
NWC received a nice pick-up from its Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams, who both earned wins to allow the Eagles to go into singles play with a 2-1 lead.
David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and
Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) defeated the Cardinals' Michael Lunka and Bobby Steingraeber 8-6 while the Purple and Gold's
Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) won a 9-7 match over Sam Puff and Andrew Rangitsch that went into an extra game.
In singles action, Kauss nearly shutout Puff at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Blancke won a third set tiebreaker to take his No. 3 singles match 7-5, 1-6, 10-6. Both of Ekman's sets went into tiebreakers before the sophomore won his third set tiebreaker to claim a 6-8 (5-7), 7-6 (9-7), 10-2 victory at No. 4 singles.
Northwestern's
Agassi Mila (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and
Collin Henslee (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Christian) were winners at Nos. 5 and 6 singles as they outlasted their Saint Mary's opponents in matches that each had two tiebreakers.
Now 9-8 overall, the Eagles will hit the road on Saturday for another non-conference match, this time against Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. Northwestern's match on the Cobbers' courts will begin at 1 p.m.
