FRIDLEY, Minn. – The Northwestern College women's tennis team evened its season record at 8-8 with a convincing 8-1 win over North Central University on Thursday afternoon. More Eagles than usual saw action in the match, while others played in a higher position.
NWC's three doubles teams took care of business to kick the Eagles off on the right foot.
Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and
Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) teamed up to sweep Leah Kacvinsky and Sadie Danzinger 8-0 in No. 1 doubles, while the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams each won 8-3.
Autumn Kampman (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) and
Aimee Clites (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) were paired as they defeated Paige Trekell and Grace Chambers at No. 2 doubles and
Rachel Richter (Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek) and
Lael Sanny (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) handed Monique Shaeffer and Taylor Burkdick a loss at No. 3 doubles.
The story was nearly all Northwestern in singles play as well, with
Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale), Northwestern's usual No. 2 singles player, facing Trekell at No. 1. Johnson handled the top spot with ease as she earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) took on her former team after transferring to Northwestern from North Central before the 2011-2012 school year. Smith worked for a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 3 singles while
Chelsey Fiecke (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) beat Danzinger by the same score at No. 4 singles.
Leah Hogle (Grundy Center, Iowa/Grundy-Center) wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Burkdick at No. 6 singles.
Now 8-8 on the season, Northwestern has won five straight matches. Off for the remainder of the week, the Eagles are looking forward to their next match on Tuesday, April 17 against UMAC rival College of St. Scholastica. The two teams will clash at Lifetime Fitness with a scheduled start time of 3 p.m.
