FRIDLEY, Minn. – It didn't take much for Northwestern College to win its fifth straight match on Thursday as the Eagles steamrolled North Central University 9-0 at Lifetime Fitness. Only two of the nine matches were not sweeps for NWC.
The Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams of
David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge)/
Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) and
Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River)/
Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) both swept their competition as they earned 8-0 wins to help send the Eagles into singles matches with a 3-0 lead.
Northwestern continued the momentum into its singles play, where the top five players all won handily at 6-0, 6-0.
Collin Henslee (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Christian) suffered just one game loss at No. 6 singles before defeating the Rams' Chris Douglas 6-1, 6-0 to wrap up the match for the Eagles.
At 8-7 overall (5-0 UMAC), NWC hasn't lost a match since March 17 against NCAA Division II foe St. Cloud State University. The Eagles, who are off the remainder of this week, will face strong competition next week, starting with the College of St. Scholastica in a make-up date on Tuesday. The Saints won the UMAC regular season crown last year before Northwestern took the conference tournament title, so the 3 p.m. match at Lifetime Fitness in Fridley should be exciting.
