Women's tennis wins first match of spring break trip

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Northwestern College women's tennis team played a pair of matches on Thursday, with both ending in 5-4 finals. The Eagles lost their first match of the day to Lebanon Valley College before claiming a win over Catholic University of America in their second contest.

Northwestern went into singles play against Lebanon Valley down 2-1 after Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) won their No. 1 doubles match 8-2. Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) did her part again at No. 1 singles, but the Eagles only took two more matches at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) defeated Lebanon Valley's Lori Noble 6-4, 6-1 while Leah Hogle (Grundy Center, Iowa/Grundy-Center) beat Nicole Kracum by default.

Later on Thursday, Northwestern turned the tides to slip past Catholic. Again, the Eagles headed into singles play down 2-1 with the two Johnsons winning their doubles match 8-2. Both Megan and Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) took care of business at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, beating Marge Selinger 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) and Ritamarie Holden 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. NWC's Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) won her match at No. 3 singles as well as she defeated Catholic's Andrea Ingram 6-4, 7-5. Smith's extra innings win was the deciding match for Northwestern at No. 5 singles.

Northwestern will play one more match before returning to Minnesota. The Eagles are scheduled to face off against Elizabethtown College on Friday morning.
