Men's Tennis drops matches to Elizabethtown, Catholic

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Northwestern fell in a pair of matches on Thursday, both by 7-2 final scores as the Eagles lost to Elizabethtown College and Catholic University of America to wind down their spring break trip to the Carolinas.

In NWC's first match of the day against Elizabethtown, Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) earned a pair of victories. The sophomore teamed up with David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) to beat Manrique Arrea and Paul Whitman 9-8 (7-4) at No. 1 doubles before handing Josh Riehl a 6-3, 6-4 loss at No. 2 singles. Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Jimmy Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) came close to taking their No. 2 doubles match before losing 8-6.

In the Eagles' night cap against Catholic, it was Ekman's turn to enter the limelight as the sophomore claimed victories in both singles and doubles action. Ekman and Blancke defeated Catholic's Joe Peters and Kyle Kramer 8-1 at No. 2 doubles prior to Ekman earning a 6-1, 6-0 win against Jason Quisberth at No. 4 singles. Kauss came close to posting a win in his No. 2 singles match before losing 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11).

Now 3-6 in 2012, Northwestern will return to Minnesota to face St. Cloud State University on March 17.
