HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Northwestern College dropped its first two spring break matches on Monday. The Eagles were edged out by St. Vincent College 5-4 before losing to Malone University 7-2.

An 8-4 victory by Lael Sanny (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and Amber Gallaway (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) over St. Vincent's Kylie Auman and Regina Wolushan gave Northwestern some momentum heading into singles play. St. Vincent's took the first and second singles matches before Gallaway earned her second victory of the match at No. 3 singles, beating Emily Morris 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7-4). Rachel Smith (St. Cloud, Minn./Bemidji) also pulled off a tiebreaker victory (6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (13-11)) at No. 4 singles, while Amy Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) won 6-4, 7-6 in fifth singles.

Northwestern had a tougher time against Malone, as the Eagles claimed victories in just two singles matches. Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) rebounded to win 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 1 singles, while Knight also went the distance in extra innings, beating Janelle Linder 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12-10).

At 2-5 in 2012, Northwestern will resume its matches on Thursday, March 8 with a doubleheader against Lebanon Valley College and Catholic University of America. Both matches will take place in Hilton Head, S.C.
