ST. PAUL -- After an energized victory against the College of St. Scholastica on Friday night, the Northwestern College men's basketball team cruised to a 92-54 victory over Northland College to cap off a 3-0 week and improve to 7-3 in UMAC play this season.
Northwestern wasted no time putting points on the board, owning an 8-0 advantage before 75 seconds had ticked off the clock.
Tom Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) hit back-to-back three-pointers early in that stretch to set the tone for what was going to be a big night. The Eagles' lead was comfortably in double digits by the 15-minute mark of the first half. After
Devon Apgar (Roxbury, N.J./Hillcrest Academy) drained consecutive baskets with five minutes left in the period, another trey from Gisler gave Northwestern a 20-point pad at 37-17. Before Northland's RJ Dean scored five straight points to end the half, the Eagles' advantage reached 31 on - you guessed it - Gisler's layup. Halfway into the second half, Northwestern head coach
Tim Grosz had his reserves in, with 13 Eagles earning points in the 92-54 final.
NWC used a 57.6 shooting percentage in the first half to boost its average for the game of 53 percent, making 35 of 66 attempts. The Eagles finished 12-26 from long range while out-rebounding Northland 44-24. After battling Crown on Friday night, the LumberJacks struggled to find the hoop from both inside and out, converting on just 38 percent of its shots and going a mere 1-9 from downtown.
Gisler scored a game-high 20 points in just 23 minutes of action, making four of his five three-point attempts.
Wade Chitwood (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell) added 13 points on 6-8 shooting, while
Aaron Reep (Springfield, Ohio/Emmanuel Christian) contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Dean finished with 15 points to lead Northland.
Now 12-9 overall, the Eagles will head into next week in a groove after winning three straight. Northwestern not only has a conference foe in Presentation College to face on Friday night, but also a long drive to Aberdeen, S.D. That game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
