WINONA, Minn. -- The Northwestern College women's tennis team started its 2012 season with a 8-1 loss to Saint Mary's University on Friday evening. Chelsey Fiecke (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) was the Eagles' lone winner, while two other matches went to a super tiebreaker.

Fiecke's 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 win came over the Cardinals' Rachael Luetmer at the No. 6 singles position. Freshman Megan Johnson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) went into extra innings in her first collegiate match, losing 1-6, 6-4, 3-10 to Baily Edwards in the No. 1 spot. Kelly Johnson (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) was the other Eagles player to extend her match before losing to Abby Voight 6-2, 5-7, 5-10.

Northwestern's top two doubles teams finished with 8-2 losses, while the No. 3 doubles team was swept 8-0.

The Eagles won't have much time to dwell on Friday's match with back-to-back contests awaiting Northwestern on Saturday. NWC will play Bemidji State University at Macalester College in St. Paul at 11 a.m. on Saturday before facing the Scots from Macalester in at 2 p.m. match. Both contests will be at the Leonard Center on Snelling Ave.
