Box Score DULUTH, Minn. -- Following a thrilling overtime victory over Northland College on Friday evening, the Northwestern College men's basketball team went cold on Saturday in a 71-51 loss to the College of St. Scholastica. The Eagles made a season-low 29.8 percent of their attempts and scored just 17 points in the first half.
Despite not making many of their attempts, Northwestern still built a seven-point lead early in the game. St. Scholastica started to build momentum off of back-to-back shots from Jonah Dahlman and Thad Picott and before long, the Saints owned a six-point advantage at 19-13 with 6:01 to go in the first half.
Brent Kettenacker (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) and Kory Kiekoefer each hit jumpers for the Eagles, but St. Scholastica went into the locker room with a 23-17 advantage.
Brett Tester took the lead for St. Scholastica early and the Saints turned their six-point halftime margin into a 16-point buffer before six minutes had ticked off the clock in the second period. Tester hit a pair of free throws and a jumper in the Saints run. Despite a Chitwood three-pointer at the 10:50 mark, the game was beginning to get out of hand for Northwestern, who found itself down 47-30. CSS's Chris Hamers answered an
Aaron Reep (Springfield, Ohio/Emmanuel Christian) layup with a three-pointer on the other side of the court to give St. Scholastica a 20-point lead. The Eagles cut the margin down to 15 on five consecutive points from Reep, but the damage was done and the Saints claimed a 71-51 victory.
NWC didn't make 10 shots in either of the two halves, going 8-28 in the first half and 9-29 in the second. The three-point line didn't do the Eagles any favors either, as the Purple and Gold went 1-12 from long range in the first half. St. Scholastica out-scored Northwestern 24-18 in the paint and 16-7 in points off of turnovers, despite NWC winning the rebounding battle.
Chitwood finished with a team-high 18 points, while Reep and
Tom Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) each had seven points in the loss. Tester led all players with 19 points for St. Scholastica (7-9, 4-1 UMAC). Chris Hamers and Derek Steve added 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Now an even 8-8 overall and 3-2 in UMAC action, Northwestern will have nearly a week to regroup and prepare for next Friday's game at Martin Luther College. The Knights, who have yet to win a game this season, will be hungry for a victory on their home court in New Ulm, Minn. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
