Eagles sweep Friday matches to win ACR Homes Volleyball Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College picked up on Friday afternoon right where it left off on Thursday night, defeating Wisconsin Lutheran College 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19) in the ACR Homes Volleyball Opener. Freshman Cari Miller (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) (Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) found her groove in the match, tallying 14 kills and a .458 attacking percentage in her third collegiate contest.

After a quick hiccup to start the match, Northwestern rebounded to hit .333, .318 and .367 in the second, third and fourth sets to overtake the Warriors in the Ericksen Center. The Eagles maintained a .270 match hitting rate while bringing strong defense at the net with 14 blocks. Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar), Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian), and Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) all joined Miller in double digit kills while Jonas had eight blocks (one solo, seven assisted).

Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) posted a career-high 49 assists in the match while earning five blocks on defense.

In Northwestern's second match of the day, the Eagles outlasted the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, sending the Falcons home after a 3-1 victory (25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 25-16) to finish 3-1 in the tournament. The senior tandem of King and Koth took over when needed most, combining for 24 kills. Stoltz turned in another solid performance with 38 assists, while Lexi Bertsch (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, MInn./Meadow Creek) had a match-high 15 digs.

As a team, the Eagles hit .193 while posting eight blocks. Jonas was all over the net once again, adding six more blocks to end her day's total at 14.

As Northwestern rebounded nicely after a tough 3-2 loss to 27th ranked UW-Oshkosh to start the day on Thursday, both Koth and King were selected to the all-tournament team by all five of the head coaches.

The Eagles can now rest for a couple days before hitting the practice court again on Monday in preparation for a home match against Saint Benedict on Wednesday, September 7. Northwestern will host the Blazers at 7 p.m. in the Ericksen Center.
