Kirby's last minute goal lifts Eagles over Cougars in UMAC debut

Box Score ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Northwestern College women's soccer player Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) showed the ultimate senior leadership on Saturday night, as her 89th-minute goal lifted the Eagles to a 3-2 victory over the University of Minnesota Morris.  The game, which took place under the lights at Mounds View High School, was NWC's first UMAC contest of the year, giving the Eagles' conference record a jump start at 1-0.

Fresh off of a two-goal, five-point day against North Central University on Friday, Lauren Cleope (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) started the Purple and Gold off on the right foot as she scored an unassisted goal at the 40:34 mark to give Northwestern a 1-0 advantage at halftime.  Cleope struck again in the 67th minute as she took a pass from Susan Scheil (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) and bent a shot into the middle of the net to make the score 2-0.

All was well on the NWC sideline until Minnesota Morris scored two goals within three minutes of one another to tie the game. Ally Helda successfully made her penalty kick attempt before Zoe Bergstrom evened the score with a goal in the 87th minute.

Then came Kirby's game-winning shot with 29 seconds on the clock as the senior took the rebound off teammate Jenna Powers (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley)' (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) shot that had deflected off of the Cougars' goalkeeper and found the back of the net.

Northwestern held an 8-7 advantage over Morris in shots and 7-4 edge in shots on goal.  Eagles goalkeeper Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) had two saves on the night to earn the victory.

The win gives the Eagles their third victory this week and evens NWC's season record at 3-3 overall. Northwestern will hit the practice field again on Monday to prepare for another game under the lights, this time at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn. on Thursday, September 22 at 7 p.m.
