Eagles pick up first win of 2011 with 3-1 victory over Jamestown

Box Score ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College earned its first win of the 2011 season on Wednesday, defeating Jamestown College 3-1 on a mild-weathered Reynolds Field. Despite a temperature that barely made it over 50 degrees and a constant 20 mph north wind throughout the game, the Eagles persevered with their offense to produce three goals.

Lauren Cleope (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) scored NWC's first goal on the day. Cleope took a long pass up the right side from Heidi Anderson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) and dribbled up before beating Jimmies goalkeeper Kayla Byle in the 21st minute, ultimately sending the game into halftime with a 1-0 score.

Scoring became more prevalant in the second half. Lindsay Halvorson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored what would be the game-winning insurance goal for Northwestern in the 65th minute, as Jamestown got on the board with a Hannah Langseth goal at 72:50.  The Eagles' Jenna Powers (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) added an insurance goal late in the game as Susan Scheil (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) assisted her score in the 88th minute.

Northwestern dominated the shots category 20-4 while owning an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.  Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) worked all 90 minutes in front of the Eagles' net, picking up the win with two saves.

NWC, now 1-3 overall, will play one more nonconference game before kicking off its UMAC schedule on Saturday night.  The Eagles will host North Central University at Reynolds Field on Friday at 4 p.m. before facing the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Mounds View High School in Arden Hills.
