MORRIS, Minn. -- The Northwestern College women's tennis team fell 5-4 to the University of Minnesota, Morris on Tuesday afternoon and will head back to the practice courts to prepare for this weekend's UMAC Tournament.
The match didn't start well for the doubles teams, as
Chelsey Fiecke (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) and Tori Viggers (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) were the only pair to win their match at No. 2 doubles, defeating Preya Chunkapura and Jessica Armstrong 8-4. Down 2-1 heading into singles action, Northwestern took just one of the first four singles matches, as
Amy Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) (Fort Dodge, Minn./Fort Dodge) beat Marina Timmerman 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
Rachel Richter (Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek) (Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek) and
Leah Hogle (Grundy Center, Iowa/Grundy-Center) (Eldora, Iowa/Grundy-Center) both won their matches at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, but the damage was already done as the Eagles came home with a 5-4 loss.
Now 6-13 overall (6-4 UMAC), the Eagles will gear up for their season finale at the UMAC Postseason Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The event's venue, the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis is a venue the Northwestern team knows well and the Eagles will bring their best. Doubles play will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, followed by the first round of singles. The remaining matches will pick up at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
