DULUTH, Minn. – The Northwestern men's tennis team fell just short in their match against St. Scholastica this past Saturday in Duluth, Minn. The Eagles fell 6-3 to the Saints.
The competition was intense in singles play. Northwestern's Nos. 2, 3, and 4 Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) (St. Paul, Minn/Harding), Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), and Josh Nelson (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) all lost to their opponents in super tiebreakers. David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge), Northwestern's No. 1 singles player, earned Northwestern's only singles win of the day, defeating Jacob Engelstad 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles play, Northwestern won two out of the three matches. Kauss and Blancke at No. 1 doubles won 8-4 along with Knight and Nelson at No. 2 doubles, who won 8-6.
With the near victory against St. Scholastica, Northwestern hopes to defeat the Saints in the UMAC Tournament this weekend. The Eagles, now 7-12, will play the University of Minnesota-Morris on May 3 in Morris before they participate in the UMAC Tournament beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
