ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Northwestern College men's tennis team competed at Bethel University on Thursday and lost to the Royals 8-1. The Eagles once again saw some promise from both the newcomers as well as improvements from the veteran tennis players.
Northwestern's No. 2 singles player
David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) won one set in his match against Kent Nichols. Nichols took the first set, 3-7, before Knight won the second set, 7-6. Nichols then won the tie breaker 10-3. At No. 4 singles player,
Josh Nelson (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and No. 6 singles James Ekman (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) both won a few games before both losing 6-4, 6-1.
In No. 1 doubles play,
Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) and
Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) earned the only win of the day by defeating Kent Nichols and Sam Scheevel 8-4. Knight and Nelson playing at No. 2 doubles and
Josh Fread (Minneapolis, Minn./Osseo) (Minneapolis, Minn./Osseo) and Josh Hess (White Lake, Wis./Antigo) at No. 3 doubles both fell to Bethel 8-1, 8-4 respectively.
After the loss to Bethel, Northwestern (0-2) will face St. Cloud State University tomorrow, Feb. 18 at Gold's Gym Tennis Center in Sartell, Minn.
