Rough outing for men's tennis team in 2011 opener

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern men's tennis team kicked off its 2011 season on Saturday, opening with a 9-0 loss at Macalester College. The Eagles saw some promising performances out of the team's newcomers while the veterans got their feet wet as well in the meet.

In the No. 1 singles match, Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) lost to Macalester's Michael Coleman 6-2, 6-3 while rookie David Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) (Fort Dodge, Minn./Fort Dodge) played a solid match before losing 6-3, 6-4 to Chris Fowler at No. 2 singles. Keagan Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) also took a few sets out of Max Edwards, but ultimately lost 6-2, 6-2 to his opponent from the Scots at No. 3 singles.

In No. 1 doubles action, Kauss and Knight nearly scored a win, but lost in a tiebreaker at 9-8 (7-3). Blancke and Josh Nelson (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) also posted a strong showing at No. 2 doubles but fell to Max Edwards and Lewis Wilcox 8-6.

Falling to 0-1 after the team's first match of the season, Northwestern will take a few days off before facing Bethel University on Tuesday, Feb. 15 in Arden Hills, Minn.
