Eagles have off night, lose to St. Olaf 3-2

Box Score ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College's 18-match winning streak came to a screeching halt on Tuesday night as St. Olaf College beat the Eagles in five sets (25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-12). NWC clearly did not have its best night on the court, and will quickly try to regroup for a doubleheader on Wednesday evening.

Northwestern hit below .200 for the first time since Sept. 18, tallying 60 kills with 27 errors. St. Olaf, who had not won since Oct. 1, took NWC's hitting away with its blocking, putting up a wall on the Eagles' outside hitters throughout the five-set match.  The Purple and Gold seemed to struggle from the get-go with their passing and setting, which made for a rough match. Serving was a problem too, as evidenced by the Eagles' 11 errors from the service line.

Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian), who was named the UMAC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, kept Northwestern in the match at crucial times. The junior finished with 16 kills and a .517 attacking percentage while posting a team-high four blocks.  Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) earned her 1,000th career kill at Northwestern during the third set, totaling 15 on the night.

Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Cari Miller (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) both had off matches on the same night, despite Koth's 15 kills.  Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) finished with 51 assists.

Defensively, King led Northwestern with 16 digs, while Stoltz was right behind with 15.

Ariel Carlson had 14 kills to lead St. Olaf (11-14), who finished with 58 team kills and a .237 attacking percentage on the night.  Justine Dammermann had 46 assists while three Oles posted five or more blocks.

Now 24-3 in 2011, Northwestern will turn its attention to Wednesday evening, when the Eagles are scheduled to host Crown College and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. NWC and Crown will play their UMAC contest at 5 p.m. before the Purple and Gold will host Eau Claire at 7:30 p.m., regardless of how long the first match goes.
