Box Score 2 ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College earned its 22nd and 23rd wins of the 2011 season on Friday evening, going deep into the night with wins against the University of Minnesota Morris and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Both matches went in the Eagles' favor as the Purple and Gold improved its current winning streak to 17 matches.
Three NWC players hit double digit kills as Northwestern squeaked out a 29-27 Set 3 win to take the 3-0 match over Minnesota Morris, with the other two set scores coming in at 25-21 and 25-11.
Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) was sensational, hitting .471 to go with a match-high 19 kills.
Cari Miller (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) added 12 kills on the opposite side while
Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) finished with 10 kills on 16 attempts.
Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) had 38 assists in the match as NWC hit a rather consistent .319 as a team.
Defensively,
Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar), Stoltz and
Lexi Bertsch (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) each had 10 or more digs, with King leading all players with 13. As a team, the Eagles posted nine blocks, five of which came off of Jonas' hands.
Steph Schmiesing had 11 kills to lead Morris, who fell to 13-11 (5-5 UMAC) following the loss.
Northwestern didn't hit as well in its second match of the night, but the Eagles' .256 attacking percentage was good enough to pull out a 3-1 (25-14, 25-15, 20-25, 25-18) victory over UW-Stout. King was the kills leader this time, posting 14 on 28 attempts while Stoltz's 40 assists put her over the 1,000 mark for the season. Koth and Miller each recorded double digit kills for the second time as the match finished just shy of 11 p.m.
Jonas was a big factor on defense once again, as NWC had 12 team blocks, seven of which came from the junior. Miller also had six blocks, while
Jessica Fife (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) had five assisted blocks in her fifth match of 2011. For the second match, Bertsch led all players with 17 digs.
Northwestern now stands at 23-2, having won all of its matches dating back to September 10. The Eagles will get a quick night of sleep in before returning to the Ericksen Center for a 1 p.m. match against Presentation College on Saturday.
