Box Score ST. PAUL – Northwestern College continued the second half of its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule with yet another victory, beating Martin Luther College 2-1. With the win, the Eagles improved to 9-4 overall and 7-1 in UMAC play.
All three goals that were scored in the game were done in the first half, as neither team scored in the second 45 minutes. The Eagles' two goals came within five minutes of one another.
Maggie LaPlante (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) scored the first goal of her Northwestern career in the 25th minute. LaPlante took a pass from
Lauren Cleope (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) before beating the goalkeeper with a high shot from 25 yards out.
Just after the game entered its 30th minute, Cleope and
Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) got a two-on-one opportunity. Cleope beat her defender on the right side and sent a shot inward, with Kirby waiting to add her quick touch from the left post to ensure Northwestern's score.
Bethany Schultz scored an unassisted goal to bring Martin Luther within one goal of the Eagles at the 32:36 mark, but NWC held off the Knights for the rest of the game to preserve the victory.
Northwestern out-shot Martin Luther 19-2 overall and 8-2 in shots on goal.
Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) recorded one save to earn the win.
NWC will now turn its attention to Saturday, October 15, when the Eagles are slated to host Bethany Lutheran College at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
