Volleyball ready for UMAC slate after UW-Oshkosh Tournament

OSHKOSH, Wis. -- Northwestern had a rough go-about at a weekend tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, winning just one of the four matches that the Eagles played. NWC beat Aurora University 3-0 after falling to Loras College, Oshkosh and Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Loras was the Eagles' first opponent of the weekend. Northwestern looked like it was on its way to a victory, winning the first two sets 25-17 and 25-20 before trailing in the next three (25-15, 25-23 and 15-13) to lose the match. Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) and Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) each had 16 kills in the match for Northwestern while Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) amassed 48 assist, setting the table for Northwestern to hit .187 for the contest. Defensively, Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg) led all players with a season-high 30 digs for the Eagles.

Next up for the Eagles was the host Wisconsin-Oshkosh, who was ranked No. 10 in the nation in the most recent AVCA Top 25 Poll. NWC took a set from the nationally ranked Titans, but ultimate lost 25-17, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22. Northwestern's offensive totals looked different than their first match against Loras, as the Eagles produced 32 kills and a .122 attacking percentage. No NWC player hit double-digits in the Kills column, as King's eight led the team. Korporal put up massive defensive numbers again, recording 30 or more digs for the second straight match. Sandstrom had her hand on five blocks in the match while King was credited with four blocks.

Northwestern went from playing some solid defense to having one of its worst defensive matches of the year amidst nine serving errors and 12 passing errors against Wisconsin Lutheran. King had a match-high 15 kills and was joined in double digits by Sandstrom and Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) who each tallied 11 kills in the match. Despite a promising third set, the Eagles lost the match 3-1 (17-25, 17-25, 25-17, 17-25).

The Eagles wrapped up their weekend with a 3-0 win over Aurora, rebounding well after Northwestern's disappointing performance against Wisconsin Lutheran. Koth had 13 kills and a .333 attacking percentage in the match while Kostek was back at it with 40 assists. As a team, Northwestern hit .208. Defensively, Korporal paced the team with 17 digs and Sandstrom had a part in six blocks in the three-set match.

After playing a full non-conference schedule that included seven ranked opponents, Northwestern is ready to begin its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule. The Eagles, who stand at 5-9 overall, will begin the conference slate on Friday, Sept. 24 with a match at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn. at 7 p.m. NWC will follow Friday's match with a Saturday matinee against Martin Luther College at 1 p.m. in New Ulm, Minn.
