NWC returns home with 8-1 win over Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn. -- The Northwestern men's tennis team improved its UMAC record to 2-1 on Thursday after an 8-1 win over Martin Luther College. All three of NWC's doubles teams won to set the stage for a near-sweep in singles play.

The combination of Caleb Kauss (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) and Josh Fread (Minneapolis, Minn./Osseo) (Minneapolis, Minn./Osseo) outdueled Andrew Becker and David Zuberbier in No. 2 doubles action to win 8-1. The Eagles' other two doubles teams won 8-4 and 8-6.

In singles play, Kauss outlasted Scott Henrich to win 7-6, 7-5. Northwestern's No. 2 singles player in Keagen Blancke (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) wasted no time to defeat the Knights' Zuberbier 6-0. Fread, who plays in the No. 4 singles spot for NWC, nearly swept his opponent as well before settling at a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ryan Obry.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-10 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Northwestern will return to the court on Tuesday, April 13 when the Eagles face North Central University at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.
