FRIDLEY, Minn. -- The Northwestern College women's tennis team closed out its regular season with four straight UMAC victories after a 9-0 win over North Central University on Thursday afternoon. Every Eagles singles and doubles pairing was victorious, paving the way for next weekend's conference tournament.
All three of NWC's doubles teams had little difficulty getting past North Central. After the duo of
Rebecca Leland (Bricelyn, Minn./United South Central) (Bricelyn, Minn./United South Central) and
Johanna Alex (San Pedro, Calif./Homeschool) (San Pedro, Calif./Homeschooled) swept Rachel Lojovich and Rachel Smith 8-0 in the No. 1 doubles match,
Dana Smith (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka),
Amy Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge),
Chelsey Fiecke (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) and
Rachel Richter (Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek) (Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek) followed suit, winning their doubles matches 8-2 and 8-1.
In singles play, Alex had no trouble besting North Central's Melissa Haugland 6-0, 6-0. Richter and Fiecke also blew by their opponents in 6-0, 6-1 fashion.
The UMAC Tournament will kick off on Friday, May 7 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Friday's events, which begin at 4 p.m., will feature all doubles play as well as the first round of singles matches before the tournament comes to a close on Saturday.
