Eagles win share of UMAC title with 62-37 win at Northland

Box Score

ASHLAND, Wis. – A lopsided 62-37 victory over Northland College on Friday night gave the Northwestern College men's basketball team at least a share of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship. The Eagles, who claimed their 12th consecutive game of the season, could win the league title outright with one more win in the the team's three remaining games.

Northwestern went into Northland's Kendrigan Gymnasium with the mindset of taking care of business, as the LumberJacks have been the one UMAC team to defeat the Eagles thus far in 2009-10. NWC made sure that result from Dec. 5th didn't happen again, holding the Jacks to 26 percent shooting while keeping Northland's leading scorer, Ryan Cannata, to just two points in the game.

After a back-and-fourth battle throughout the first half, Northwestern closed out the period with eight consecutive points to lead 27-19. The Eagles picked up in the second half right where they left off in the first, scoring 11 straight points as the lead ballooned to 38-19. At the end of the 40 minute contest, Northwestern had its sights set on Saturday's afternoon game at St. Scholastica with a 62-37 win over Northland.

The Eagles didn't turn in their best offensive performance of the season, but their 39 percent shooting night was enough to overtake the LumberJacks. NWC made a third of their three-point attempts while Northland made just two of their 19 shots from downtown. In addition to the Eagles' 45-36 advantage in rebounding, NWC's extra passes certainly made a difference as the visitors posted a 15-6 final tally in assists.

A trio of Northwestern players scored in double figures, as Reid Berens (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, MInn./Centennial), Robbie Anderstrom (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) and Tom Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) all scored 10 points. Anderstrom was the team's leading rebounder with eight boards, while Eric Garst (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) and Brian Lecheler (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) combined for 10 assists.

NWC will take its 16-6 overall record (10-1 UMAC) into Duluth, Minn. on Saturday, Feb. 13, where St. Scholastica will be waiting after a two-point victory over Crown College on Friday night. The Eagles will be seeking their 13th straight victory to earn the outright conference title, while the Saints will be battling for a spot amongst the league's top for teams. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
