ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College evened the score with the University of Minnesota, Morris on Friday afternoon as the Eagles defeated the Cougars 1-0. A Minnesota-Morris own goal in the game's 66th minute neutralized the Eagles' overtime defeat in Morris on Sept. 18.
The score went down in the official book as an own goal, but several Eagles had a hand in what proved to be the game-winner.
Heidi Anderson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) booted a corner kick from the right side and Alyssa Hester (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville) got a leg on the ball in front of the net before it bounced off of a Cougars player and went in between the pipes.
Morris actually got more shots off in the game, holding a 13-9 advantage. NWC goalkeeper
Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) and her teammates fended off the Cougars offense though, combining for 11 saves on the day. Across the field, Morris' Emily Jacob had four saves.
With the victory, Northwestern improves to 8-7 on the year and 8-2 in UMAC play, solidifying the Eagles' position in second place in the conference standings behind the College of St. Scholastica. NWC will return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when they host Presentation College at Reynolds Field at 2 p.m.
