Women's Soccer salvages split for weekend in 3-1 win over Northland

ASHLAND, Wis.—The Northwestern College women's soccer team recorded its second win of the 2010 season on Saturday after defeating Northland College 3-1. The Eagles out-shot their opponents 21-5 and are pleased to return home with a win after suffering a loss at St. Scholastica on Friday.

Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) started Northwestern's scoring with an unassisted goal at the 37:12 mark. Following a 1-0 score at halftime, Shannon Sopher (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) added the first of two insurance goals that the Eagles would get, beating Northland's Sarah Weed after taking an assist from Kyrie Jorgenson (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) in the 51st minute.

The LumberJills' Melanie Rasor answered with a goal of her own in the 54th mark before receiving a red card towards the end of the game, meaning she was dismissed from the game. Kirby then scored her second goal of the game at the 66:43 mark to give the Eagles a 3-1 victory.

17 of Northwestern's 21 shots were on goal, including six alone from Kirby. Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) posted two saves in the game while yielding Rasor's goal.

The Eagles, now 2-6 on the year (2-2 UMAC), will welcome Bethany Lutheran College and Martin Luther College to Reynolds Field next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8 and 9. NWC's game against Bethany Lutheran on Friday is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
