ST. PAUL -- After coming back to win their battle of the season in five sets on September 25, the Northwestern College volleyball handled Martin Luther College much better on Friday afternoon, dealing the Knights a 3-0 loss (25-19, 25-14, 25-21) in the Ericksen Center. Following that match, NWC took care of business with its local rival as the Eagles beat Bethel University 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-18).

Against Martin Luther, Northwestern out-hit the Knights with a .351 attacking percentage compared to .122 for the visitors. Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) paced the Eagles with 13 while her team recorded 47 as a whole. Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) added 10 kills on 22 attempts, chipping in seven digs on defense. As usual, Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) was successful in quarterbacking Northwestern's offense, piling up 39 assists along the way.

The Eagles relied more on their blocking skills than digging on defense as evidenced by the home team's seven blocks. Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) had her hands in five of those blocks, two of which were solo. Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) led NWC with eight digs.

Rebecca Engelbrecht led Martin Luther with 10 kills while Mackenzie Krentz had 24 assists.

After Bethel lost to Martin Luther 3-1, the Royals chimed up to give Northwestern a competitive match. The Eagles prevailed as Bethel took Northwestern to extra innings in the second set before the home team took care of business in Set No. 3 to close out the match in front of an energized crowd.

Koth had another special performance, as the junior had 16 kills on 31 attempts for a .452 attacking percentage. Sandstrom had things going her way in the middle too as she slammed home 14 digs while King rounded out an all-around solid performance for the Eagles with 11 kills. Kostek continued to push her career assists mark deep in to the 3,000s with a 46-assist performance in the match while setting NWC to a .264 rate as a team.

On the other side of the court, Nicole Wriedt had 11 kills for Bethel and Amy Werner had 10.

Defensively, Korporal led all players with 18 digs to close out her week with a .969 reception percentage. Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) rebounded from an injury last weekend to post six blocks in the match, with Koth adding three more.

Northwestern, who improves to 19-10 overall (8-1 UMAC), remains perfect at home while having won 13 of its last 14 matches. The Eagles are able to take the rest of the weekend off before hitting the practice court again next week. NWC's next opponent will be the University of Minnesota, Morris next Friday, Oct. 22 in Morris, Minn.
