Eagles rebound with wins over Northland, Finlandia

ASHLAND, Wis. -- The Northwestern College volleyball team recovered from its loss at St. Scholastica on Friday to post a pair of victories over Northland College and Finlandia University on Saturday. With the wins, NWC increased its record to 16-10 overall and 6-1 in UMAC play.

Against Northland, the Eagles didn't take long to establish a flow as Northwestern won 25-13, 25-30, 25-20. Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) paced NWC with 10 kills on 19 attempts while Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) followed with seven kills. Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) ran the Eagles' offense well, tallying 33 assists while the Purple and Gold maintained a .347 attacking percentage. The second set was especially good to head coach Beth Wilmeth's team as NWC had 15 kills on 26 attempts with just two errors.

Northwestern shut down Northland's offense right at the net as the Eagles owned an 8-3 count in team blocks. Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) (Neenah, Wis./Victory Christian) and Koth each had their hands in three of NWC's blocks.

In their second match of the day, everyone in an Eagles uniform played as Northwestern sent Finlandia's six-member team packing 25-10, 25-15, 25-10. Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) had a match-high 13 kills, followed by Heidi Peters (Glennallen, Alaska/Glennallen)' (Glennallen, Alaska/Glennallen) 12. For the match, setters Kostek and Krista Stoltz (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) produced 34 of the team's 43 assists while the Eagles hit a season-high .487 and tallied 46 kills compared to Finlandia's 13.

Sandstrom was Northwestern's leading blocker with three solo blocks.

Northwestern will return home to practice before hosting Bethany Lutheran College on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Ericksen Center. One day later, the Eagles will welcome Martin Luther College and Bethel University to its home gymnasium for a triangular.
