Eagles dismantle North Central 82-54

Box Score

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Northwestern College men's basketball team won its eighth consecutive game of the 2009-10 season on Tuesday evening, defeating North Central University 82-54 in Minneapolis. The Eagles had built up a double-digit lead over their opponents after just 11 minutes before owning a lopsided 46-23 halftime advantage.

North Central led 10-9 with 13:41 remaining in the first half before the Eagles went on a 14-4 run that was spearheaded by back-to-back three-pointers by Wade Chitwood (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell) (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell). Northwestern closed out the period with a 9-1 run to go into the locker room with the scoreboard reading 46-23. The rest of the game was history, as a 54.4 percent mark from the field and a 48 percent performance from behind the three-point line paved the way for an 82-54 victory.

Northwestern's hot-shooting night started with a scorching first half, where the Eagles made 60 percent of their 30 shots overall and 10 attempts from downtown. North Central, on the other hand, was held to 38 percent shooting for the game. The Rams were unable to make any of their 11 three-point attempts in the game.

Stephen Hanson (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha) (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) was 6-11 from the field for 16 points to pace NWC. Reid Berens (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) added 4 points on 6-8 shooting, while Chitwood, a freshman, ended with career highs in 13 points and seven rebounds. Brian Lecheler (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) contributed six points and four assists for the Eagles.

Jeremy Grilley had 18 points for North Central on 9-10 shooting.

Now 12-6 overall (6-1 UMAC), Northwestern shifts its attention to Saturday, Jan. 30, when Crown College comes to the Ericksen Center. In addition to Northwestern celebrating the 30-year anniversary of the men's basketball team's NCCAA Division II national championship in 1980, both teams' coaches will be participating in the National Basketball Coaches Association's Coaches for Cancer campaign and will wear white sneakers with their formal game attire. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
