Men's Hoops wins fourth straight

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Northwestern College men's basketball team won its fourth straight contest while wiggling itself back into a four-way tie for first place in the UMAC standings with a 76-65 win over Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday evening. Stephen Hanson (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha) (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) scored 20 or more points for the second consecutive evening, as the senior led the Eagles to back-to-back wins to wrap the weekend up.

Northwestern was on the winning side of a tight 37-33 halftime score before extending the lead to as much as 11 points on a made basket by Robbie Anderstrom (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) with 11:27 left to play in the game. The Vikings cut the Eagles' lead to three points with under five minutes to go, but an 8-0 run helped NWC leave Mankato with an 11-point victory.

The Eagles made nearly 47 percent of their attempts while Tim Grosz's defense held Bethany to a 40 percent shooting performance. NWC owned an 11-board advantage in rebounding while outscoring the Vikings 17-4 in second chance points.

Hanson made more than half of his shot attempts in the team's second game in less than 24 hours, going 7-12 from the field and 6-7 from the free throw line for 20 points. Gabe Jefferson (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) was Northwestern's leading rebounder with nine boards to go with eight points. Eric Garst (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) tallied 15 points on the night, joining Brian Lecheler (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) with four assists apiece.

Trevor Bartelt scored a team-high 14 points for Bethany Lutheran while a trio of other players scored 13 points.

Northwestern improves to 2-0 in 2010 and 8-6 overall. At 3-1 in UMAC play, the Eagles currently share the top spot in the conference with Presentation, Minnesota-Morris and Crown. NWC will get its first of two shots at Crown next Saturday, when the Eagles travel to St. Bonifacius, Minn. for a 5 p.m. affair.
