NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Northwestern College volleyball team was unable to avenge its loss from earlier in the week, losing their first of two matches on Friday to St. Olaf College.  The Eagles won the match's first set, but it was all Oles after that as St. Olaf defended its home court in a 3-1 win.

Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) had 13 kills for Northwestern who posted a .117 attacking percentage as a team for the match.  Sarah Whitmore (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake Christian) (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake Christian) added 11 kills on 19 attempts, while Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minn. Christian) led the Eagles with 21 set assits.

As a team, NWC kept up with its opponent, matching St. Olaf in kills, assists and digs.  The Oles held the upper hand in both attacking percentage and blocks, which proved to be the difference-makers.

In the team's second match of the day, Northwestern picked up its first win of the 2009 season, defeating Carlton College 3-1 at St. Olaf's Skoglund Center.  After losing the first set 25-16, the Eagles won the remaining sets 25-22, 30-28 and 27-25.

Sophomore Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) recorded a career-high 16 kills in the match to go with a .406 attacking percentage.  Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) also added double-digit kills, posting 10 on 19 attempts.  Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) added nine and eight kills, respectively.  As a team, Northwestern hit .267 in the match.

Although NWC only participated in Friday's part of the two-day tournament, the Eagles were still represented on the all-tournament team, as Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) was awarded all-tournament honors.
