Volleyball splits matches on Day 1 of Augsburg Tournament

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Northwestern College volleyball team lost its first match of Day 1 at the Augsburg College volleyball tournament, falling to the 21st ranked-College of St. Benedict 3-0 before defeating Macalester College 3-1 in the team's second match.

St. Ben's, who handed NWC an intense 3-1 loss in both teams' first match of the season, left no questions unanswered in Friday's match, winning 25-9, 25-14, 25-16.  Two hours later, Northwestern was able to fend off Macalester 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16.

Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) led the Eagles with 25 kills on the day, 19 of which came in the Macalester match.  Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) added 21 kills for Northwestern, who went to 2-3 on the young season after Day 1 at the tournament.

NWC will be back in action at the Augsburg Tournament on Saturday, facing off against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 11 a.m. before playing an opponent to be determined at either 1 or 3 p.m., depending on the team's place in the tournament standings.
