St. Kate's beats Eagles 7-2

LAKEVILLE, Minn. (Feb. 10, 2009) – The Northwestern College women's tennis team had a better showing than their performance in last week's 2009 debut, but the result ended in the Eagles' second loss of the season. The College of St. Catherine claimed a 7-2 victory at Lifetime Fitness.

Both Northwestern's Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams claimed victory. Wendy Miller (Roseville, MN/Saint Joseph High School) (Roseville, Minn./St. Joseph) and Rebecca Leland (Bricelyn, Minn./United South Central) (Bricelyn, MN / United South Central) defeated their counterparts from St. Kate's 8-6, while Johanna Alex (San Pedro, Calif./Homeschool) (Crete, Greece/Homeschool) and Dana Smith (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) won in 8-3 fashion.

Miller and Leland, the Eagles' Nos. 1 and 2 singles players, both took their individual matches to tiebreakers. However, both players were on the losing end, as Miller lost her tiebreaker 5-10, while Leland fell in a 7-10 tiebreaker.

Northwestern will play again on Thursday, Feb. 12 against Bethel University. The match, which will be at Public Indoor Tennis in Fridley, Minn., is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
