Men's Basketball drops game to UW-River Falls

Box Score

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- In a rare occurrence, the Northwestern College men's basketball team struggled to rebound the basketball and that led to a 71-52 loss in the Eagles' bout with Wisconsin-River Falls on Tuesday night. The Falcons outrebounded NWC, who usually finishes well in the boards column, 54-24 and capitalized on 24 second-chance points in the game.

Down by six points at halftime, Northwestern lost control of the game midway through the second half when River Falls' lead ballooned from three to 15 points with 11:08 to play. The Falcons, who made 43 percent of their shot attempts, held NWC to 21 second-half points in the 19-point victory.

Northwestern countered with a mere 34 percent shooting performance, making only seven shots in the final 20 minutes of the game. Gabe Jefferson (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) was the only Eagle player to make more than half of his attempts (4-5), but no one on Tim Grosz's squad was able to hit double digits. Jefferson had nine points in the game, while point guard Eric Garst (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) was Northwestern's leader with six rebounds and four assists to go with his six points.

River Falls countered with a trio of double-digit scorers, including Jake Voeltz, who scored 23 points and grabbed 14 boards.

With the loss, the Eagles fall to 4-6 overall (1-1 UMAC), while the Falcons up their record to 4-6 in 2009-10. NWC will take a break over the Christmas holiday before hitting the court again on Dec. 29-30 when the Eagles participate in a tournament hosted by St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. Northwestern will face St. Norbert on Dec. 29 before playing either Edgewood College or the University of Chicago on Dec. 30.
