UW-Superior overcomes Eagles in final minutes

Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- A loss was not what Northwestern men's basketball head coach Tim Grosz had in mind as his team made the two-and-a-half hour drive to Superior, Wis. to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Eagles recovered from a 41-25 first half deficit to tie the game at 62-62, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away in the final minute to win 73-64.

Down by 16 after the initial 20 minutes of play, Northwestern rebounded with 39 points in the second period - seven more points than the Eagles' opponents, but the attempted comeback wasn't enough, as NWC couldn't overcome Superior's 51 percent shooting performance in the game. For the sixth time this season, Northwestern's opponents have shot 50 percent or better from behind the three-point line in at least one of the game's two halves. The Yellow Jackets drained half of their attempts from downtown in the first half to jump out to the big lead while forcing 14 turnovers throughout 40 minutes of play. Superior gave up seven turnovers of its own on Wednesday night.

While the Eagles scored 24 points in the paint compared to Superior's 18, the Yellow Jackets scored 14 points off of NWC's turnovers.

Northwestern, who finished the game at 46 percent from the floor, was led by Reid Berens (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), who scored 20 points while grabbing a team-high five rebounds. Gabe Jefferson (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) chipped in 15 points on 5-7 shooting, while freshman Tom Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) continued to shine in the early part of his career with 11 points on 4-8 shooting.

Superior's Dan Culy led his team's early charge, making four of his five 3-point attempts in the first half. Culy finished with 15 points, while Jake Smith made nine of his 13 shots for 22 points.

With the loss, Northwestern drops to 4-4 overall (1-1 UMAC). UW-Superior improves to 4-2 on the season (1-1 WIAC). The Eagles will return home for a game against Luther College on Friday, Dec. 11 (7:30 p.m. start) before wrapping up their pre-Christmas schedule with an away contest at UW-River Falls on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
