Northland knocks NWC out of UMAC Tournament

Box Score

WASHBURN, Wis. -- The Northwestern College women's soccer team closed the books on its 2009 season a little earlier than it hoped on Tuesday, as the Eagles lost a 2-1 battle to Northland College in the first round of the UMAC Post-Season Tournament.

An early goal by Northland's Melanie Rasor put the Lumberjills on the board in less than six minutes, making the Eagles play comeback soccer. Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) scored from a Heidi Anderson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) pass at 42:49, sending the game into halftime with a 1-1 tie.

Mariah Cook scored the game-winner for Northland in the 57th minute as she capitalized on a cross from Sarah Strobino to account for the difference-maker. The Eagles couldn't get past the Lumberjills throughout the next 33 minutes and second-seeded Northland earned itself a date with St. Scholastica in the tournament championship.

Northwestern, the postseason tournament's third seed, was only able to get four shots off throughout the entire game and just one in the second half. On the other side of the field, Rhonda Morgan (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) had five saves in her final game as an Eagle while allowing a pair of goals.

NWC wraps its season up with a 10-8-2 overall record while going 9-3-2 in UMAC play.
