NWC comes out flat in 77-66 loss to Augsburg

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College men's basketball team experienced its worst shooting performance of the 2009-10 season en route to a 77-66 loss to Augsburg College in the Ericksen Center on Saturday evening. After the Eagles led by seven points after the initial six minutes, the Auggies took over, leading by as much as 17 in the game.

After Stephen Hanson (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha) (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) made consecutive free throws to put NWC up by seven, the Eagles' lead slipped away quickly, as Augsburg went on a 21-0 scoring spree over the next five minutes. Northwestern, who went into the locker room on the losing side of a 40-30 score at halftime, kept pace with the Auggies in the second period, shrinking Augsburg's lead to five at one point. The visitors' hot hand from the first period got even hotter in the second, as the Auggies made 57 percent of their three-point attempts in the final 20 minutes to cruise to a 77-66 victory.

Northwestern struggled all night, making just 37 percent of its attempts from the field.  Augsburg, meanwhile, made 48 percent of its shots, including eight of its 15 attempts from downtown, throughout the game. The Auggies out-rebounded the Eagles as well in a 39-35 final board count.

Reid Berens (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) led Northwestern with 16 points, while Brian Lecheler (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) chipped in with 11 points. Hanson and Berens paced the Eagles with seven and six rebounds, respectively. Both Lecheler and Berens recorded four assists on the night.

Augsburg had a trio of players in double figures, including Andy Grzesiak-Grimm, who scored 19 points on 7-10 shooting. Both David Olson and Jon Cassens made two of their three attempts from long range.

With the loss, Northwestern slips to 3-2 on the season while Augsburg remains undefeated thus far in 2009-10 at 3-0. The Eagles will practice all week before opening their UMAC conference schedule on Friday, Dec. 4 when the College of St. Scholsatica comes to the Ericksen Center. Friday's tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
