Men's Hoops outlasts Macalester in 72-48 win

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College men's basketball team won its third consecutive game on Tuesday night, defeating Macalester College 72-48. A solid all-around night for the Eagles that produced a 46 percent shooting performance and 24 points off of 17 Macalester turnovers helped Northwestern remain undefeated at home in 2008-09.

Before 10 minutes had ticked off the clock, the Eagles held an eight-point cushion after Robbie Anderstrom (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) scored a layup. NWC's pad remained between six and eight points throughout the rest of the half, as the Eagles went into the locker room with a 34-27 halftime lead.  Macalester cut Northwestern's lead to three early in the second period, but the Eagles held their opponents from down Snelling Avenue scoreless throughout the final 7:25 of the game to produce a 17-0 run and a 72-48 final score.

In addition to their second-best shooting percentage of the early season, Northwestern out-rebounded Macalester 39-28 and outscored the Scots 12-3 in second chance points. MAC's drought at the end of the game didn't help the visitors' shooting percentage, as the Scots finished the game at 20-52 for 39 percent.

Several Eagles turned in great performances in the game, none of which were better than Gabe Jefferson (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) and Eric Garst (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain) (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain). Jefferson was 7-10 for 17 points and six rebounds, while Garst's 5-6 night produced 14 points to go with seven rebounds and eight assists while the senior committed no turnovers.

Reid Berens (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), who was named the UMAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, finished 5-8 for 15 points and eight rebounds and Brian Lecheler (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) made six of his 12 attempts for 13 points.

Colin Keeley scored a team-high 11 points off the bench for Macalester, who is under new leadership with first-year head coach Tim Whittle. Following tonight's loss, the Scots are 1-1 on the season.

Northwestern (3-1) will take a quick Thanksgiving break before hitting the court again on Saturday, Nov. 28, when the Eagles host Augsburg College at the Ericksen Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
