Eagles claw Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn. -- The Northwestern College volleyball team polished off its opponents from Martin Luther College in a mere 53 minutes on Friday evening, as the Eagles did a quick 3-0 number on the Knights.  NWC improved its current winning streak to seven while bumping the team's number of consecutive UMAC victories to 20 in a 25-18, 25-6, 25-20 final.

Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) paced the Eagles throughout the match, leaidng all players with 10 kills on 15 attempts for a personal attacking percentage of .467.  Northwestern hit .325 for the match while holding Martin Luther to a negative number at -.041.  Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) added nine kills on 11 attempts for NWC.

Northwestern successfully landed 15 of its 24 attack attempts in the first set with only three errors.  In a lopsided 25-6 second set, Northwestern outhit the Knights .462 to -.480, as Martin Luther recorded only two kills.

The new-look Eagle squad, which features some players seeing time at different spots in the rotation than fans might be used to, continued to take shape as Danielle Rhodes (Iowa City, Iowa/City) (Iowa City, Iowa/City) was the only player to tally double-digit digs with 14.  The libero-turned-outside hitter finished the night with three kills on six attempts while playing all six rotations.

Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) (18) and Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (17) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) combined for 35 assists while being partially responsible for the Eagles' successful hitting night.  Defensively, Sandstrom and Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) got their hand in five and four blocks, respectively.  Koth had three solo blocks alone.

Northwestern, now 10-7 overall and 5-0 in UMAC play, will play an afternoon doubleheader in Mankato, Minn. on Saturday.  The Eagles will face Bethany Lutheran College in a 1 p.m. contest before playing nonconference opponent Gustavus Adolphus College at Bethany Lutheran immediately afterwards.
