ASHLAND, Wis. -- The Northwestern College volleyball team is just one win away from sweeping its UMAC competition for the second consecutive season as the Eagles defeated Northland College 3-0 on Friday night.
Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) and
Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) each had 12 kills as the Eagles won 25-20, 25-16, 25-23.
Slagter was also Northwestern's leader in set assists, joining
Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) as they together tallied 34 assists and the Eagles hit .227.
Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg) and
Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) recorded 15 and 14 digs, respectively, for NWC, who also improved to 18-9 overall (13-0 UMAC) in 2009.
Northland's Melissa Anderson had eight kills in the game to pace the Lumberjills, who had 29 kills on 111 attempts (.081). Northwestern countered with 45 kills.
The Eagles, who have won all but two of their UMAC contests this season in 3-0 fashion, will go for the undefeated conference season on Saturday. Northwestern will play a league match against St. Scholastica at 11 a.m. tomorrow before facing UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m. Both matches are in St. Scholastica's Reif Gym in Duluth, Minn.
