Jorgenson breaks all-time career goals record as Eagles shut out Martin Luther in 9-0 final

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- Scoring was aplenty as Northwestern College shut out Martin Luther College for the second time this season. Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and Kyrie Jorgenson (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) each recorded a hat trick in Friday's meeting between the two teams as the Eagles cruised to a 9-0 victory. The game was especially special for Jorgenson, who broke Cryi Johnson's (1999-2002) all-time record for goals in a career at Northwestern. Jorgenson's 46th career goal came at the 50:37 mark, making her the new leader with another season and change to play.

Jorgenson, known to her teammates as KJ, started the game's scoring with an unassisted goal in the 18th minute. Kirby added a pair of scores just 39 seconds apart from one another at 29:52 and 20:31 before Shannon Sopher (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) notched her first goal of the season in the 44th minute to give the Eagles a 4-0 halftime lead. Jorgenson added her second goal of the day in the 48th minute before setting the new career record with a shot in the 50th.

Kirby followed with her third goal of the day six minutes later before yielding the field to some of the less experienced players. Kirby's sister, Tina (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), then added back-to-back goals in the 63rd and 73rd minutes to account for the 9-0 final.

For Kirby, the trio of goals boosted her season total to 19, just one shy of tying Jorgenson's record for goals in a season that was set in 2007.

Amy Green (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls), Jorgenson, Tina Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), Alyssabeth Hester (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville), Susan Scheil (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) and Sarah Oehrig (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) all recorded assists in the 90-minute contest.

NWC's Rhonda Morgan (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) worked 61 minutes in goal before yielding her duties to Tara Kubiszewski (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) for the rest of the game as the two together earned the shutout. Morgan saved Martin Luther's only shot of the game. Northwestern countered with 34 shots.

Northwestern (7-7-2, 6-3-2 UMAC), who played on a very muddy and wet Reynolds Field on Friday, will return to the pitch on Saturday for a 12 p.m. matchup against Bethany Lutheran College.  The game, which was originally scheduled to be played at Reynolds Field, will move to Mounds View High School due to field conditions on Northwestern's home field.
