Women's Soccer leaves Duluth with 2-1 loss

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. -- Northwestern College found a small window of success in its last meeting with the College of St. Scholastica in a 0-0 tie and hoped for the same if not better on Saturday. That wasn't the case though, as the Saints posted a 2-1 victory over the Eagles to maintain their first place position in the UMAC standings.

Angie Groh scored her eighth goal of the year for St. Scholastica just under four minutes into the game to give the host team a 1-0 lead. Northwestern's Samm Ellingson (Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount) (Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount) tied the score just before halftime, as she capitalized on a shot at the 43:52 mark. Ellingson's goal was assisted by Lindsey Anderson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) and Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial).

23 minutes into the second period, Ellyn Litecky scored the game-winning goal for St. Scholastica, and the Saints defense preserved a 2-1 victory to improve their team's record to 12-3-2 (10-0-1 UMAC).

St. Scholastica held a strong 16-3 lead in shots, but Rhonda Morgan (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) tallied six saves in the process for Northwestern. The Saints' Bailey Mahlum had two saves in 90 minutes of work in front of the net.

Northwestern falls to 5-7-2 (5-3-2 UMAC) with the loss and will have a few days to think about it before hitting the pitch again on Tuesday. The Eagles will host Hamline University in a nonconference contest, which is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
