Box Score

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College volleyball team is two for two in Dig Pink matches as the Eagles handed the Cougars from the University of Minnesota, Morris a 3-1 loss on Friday night. Northwestern is now 2-0 in Dig Pink contests after defeating St. Scholastica in 2008's event.

NWC looked strong throughout the first two matches, defeating Morris 25-17 and 25-19. Northwestern's defense held Morris to negative attacking percentages in the first two periods while posting positive marks of their own. The Eagles lost their rhythm in the third set though, as the Cougars, who entered the match 3-4 in UMAC play, bested NWC 25-19. The home team returned to its usual form in Set No. 4, winning the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) and Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) each had 10 kills to lead Northwestern, while Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) combined for 44 assists. The Eagles hit .103 as a team, besting Morris' mark of .045.

Defensively, Danielle Rhodes (Iowa City, Iowa/City) (Iowa City, Iowa/City) and Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg) each had an 18-dig match, while Sarah Whitmore (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake Christian) (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake Christian) had her hand in a whopping seven blocks. As a unit, Northwestern had ten blocks in the match. The Cougars (10-13, 4-4 UMAC) countered with 9.5 blocks.

Allie Humphrey had nine blocks to lead the visitors, while Stephanie Schmiesing added eight.

With the win, Northwestern continues its undefeated mark in UMAC play at 9-0, while improving the 2009 overall record to 15-8. It was the Eagles' 24th straight conference victory. Since the beginning of the 2007 season, Northwestern is 36-1 in UMAC matches. NWC will play a nonconference match at St. Mary's University in Winona, Minn. next Tuesday, Oct. 20 before resuming league play at home on Friday and Saturday. Tuesday's match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
