ST. PETER, Minn. -- Saturday was a highly productive day for the Northwestern volleyball team, as it came away with a UMAC victory over Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn. before driving up the road to take a nonconference win from Gustavus Adolphus College. With the victories, Northwestern continues its current nine-match winning streak while improving its UMAC record to 6-0.

The visitors gave new Bethany Lutheran head coach Mike Walters a quick introduction to Eagle Volleyball, as NWC handed the Vikings a 25-22, 25-16, 25-20 loss. Northwestern continued to hit well, posting a .270 attacking percentage compared to Bethany's .086 performance. Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) paced the Eagles with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Both had individual attacking percentages over .275.

Sarah Whitmore (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake Christian) (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake Christian) led NWC with six blocks before going down with an injury. As a team, Northwestern held an 8-4 advantage in blocks while also besting the Vikings in digs. Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg) led all players with 18 digs, while Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Prinsburg) had 23 assists in the match.

In a rare situation where a team ends one match and then drives to another town to play its second match of the day, Northwestern stayed warm to beat Gustavus Adolphus on its home court in St. Peter. The 22-25, 25-21, 24-26, 26-24, 15-10 victory was the Eagles' first five-set win in 2009.

Once again, NWC held statistical advantages over their opponents in hitting percentage, kills, digs and blocks. Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) went on a tear, hitting .341 to lead the pack with 19 kills and five blocks. Koth also did well, tallying 17 kills. Freshman Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) filled in for the injured Whitmore nicely, posting a career-high 12 kills on 27 attempts.  Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and Slagter combined for 57 assists, as the Eagles hit .222 as a team.

Two players in an NWC uniform exceeded 20 digs in the match including King and Korporal. King had a match-high 27 digs.

Together, Gustavus' Olivia Warren and Janey Helland had 32 kills to lead the Gusties.

Northwestern wraps up a successful week that included four wins with a 12-7 overall record (6-0 UMAC). The Eagles will be back in action next week, when they host Presentation College and the University of Minnesota, Morris. Presentation will come to the Ericksen Center on Thursday, Oct. 15 for an 8 p.m. affair before Northwestern welcomes Morris on Friday, Oct. 16 and 7 p.m.
