Then there were two: Eagles share UMAC's top spot with Martin Luther following 66-53 win over Morris

MORRIS, Minn. (Jan. 25, 2009) – Northwestern College extended its winning streak to eight games on Saturday night after defeating the University of Minnesota, Morris 66-53 in Morris. The Eagles and Cougars were two of three teams who entered Saturday's game tied for the conference's top spot.

After a back-and-forth first half that resulted in a 31-28 lead by Morris, Daniel Fragodt's bucket with 6:50 left in the game put the Cougars within two points of Northwestern. Forget the back-and-forth after that, as the Eagles scored six straight points to eventually lead 58-49 before owning their largest lead of the night when the clock struck zero and the scoreboard read 66-53.

Northwestern made 25 of its 55 shot attempts from the field for a 46 percent mark, while Morris countered with 36 percent. Both John Duren (Austin, Minn./Austin) (Austin, Minn./Austin) and Brian Lecheler (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) made more than half of their shots, scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively. Stephen Hanson (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha) (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) also had a big night, scoring 18 points to go with 10 rebounds for the double-double. Steve Discher (Andover, Minn./Andover) (Andover, Minn./Andover), who continues to look good after returning from an injury at midseason, scored 12 points in the win.

Fragodt was Morris' (8-9 overall, 5-2 UMAC) high scorer, tallying 16 points.

NWC (14-4 overall), who remains tied atop the UMAC with Martin Luther at 6-1 in conference play, will take a breather before playing its sole game next week at Crown College. The Storm will host Northwestern in a rare Thursday night affair, which is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
