MANKATO, Minn. (Apr. 1, 2008) – There was no fooling anyone on Tuesday as Northwestern College's men's and women's tennis teams both claimed 9-0 wins over Bethany Lutheran College. The wins were a great rebound from Saturday, when both Eagle squads were beaten in their UMAC opener by St. Scholastica.
The Northwestern men made sure of their first victory for 2008, leaving no question as to who the better team was on Tuesday. The doubles combination of
Jeremiah Schneck (Faribault, Minn./Faribault) (Faribault, Minn./Faribault) and
Noah Persson (Monticello, MN/Monticello High School) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) exemplified that point to its finest, defeating their No. 2 doubles opponents from Bethany Lutheran 8-1 in a mere 28 minutes.
The Eagles No. 1 singles player in
John Barnes (Nashua, IA/Nashua-Plainfield High School) (Nashua, Iowa/Nashua-Plainfield) had no problems with Ryan Latterman, taking strait sets in 6-1, 6-0 fashion. Three of Northwestern's singles players recorded at least one 6-0 set in their individual matches.
Shifting to the women's side, it was much of the same story for Northwestern. After a sweep in doubles competition, all of the Eagles singles matches resulted in victories.
Wendy Miller (Roseville, MN/Saint Joseph High School) (Roseville, Minn./St. Joseph) swept Bethany's Elizabeth Kopacek in 6-0, 6-0 form, while no Eagles gave up more than two points on any given set.
The win bumps Northwestern's men to 1-11 (1-1 UMAC) in 2008, while the Eagles women move closer to .500 at 5-6 (1-1 UMAC).
NWC is scheduled to play two more matches this week, both of which will take place at the Fischer Courts on Northwestern's campus. Thursday afternoon will feature the Eagles against Macalester (3:30 p.m.), followed by a Saturday morning affair versus Minnesota-Morris (9:30 a.m.)
