DULUTH, Minn. (Mar. 29, 2008) – Both of Northwestern College's men's and women's tennis teams had a rough go around in both teams' Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener. The College of St. Scholastica handed the Eagle men a 9-0 sweep, while St. Scholastica's women took care of Northwestern in 8-1 fashion.
Northwestern's No. 1 singles player in
John Barnes (Nashua, IA/Nashua-Plainfield High School) (Nashua, Iowa/Nashua-Plainfield) gave the Eagles their best shot in singles contests, falling 2-6, 3-6 to the Saints' Dillon Sterle. NWC's
Jeremiah Schneck (Faribault, Minn./Faribault) (Faribault, Minn./Faribault) gave a strong effort in the No. 3 singles match, but lost to Nemanja Radesevic 2-6, 4-6.
The men's doubles matches all ended in St. Scholastica's favor by 8-5, 8-5 and 8-4 accounts.
On the women's side,
Wendy Miller (Roseville, MN/Saint Joseph High School) (Roseville, Minn./St. Joseph) was the only Northwestern player to record a win, taking St. Scholastica's Katie Motley 7-5, 4-6 (10-5).
The Saints, who entered the match 9-5, handily controlled the rest of the match, winning every other set with the exception of Miller's.
Northwestern's men are still looking for their first win of the season at 0-11 (0-1 UMAC). The Eagle women's squad is currently 4-6 (0-1 UMAC) in 2008. Both teams will travel to Mankato, Minn. on Tuesday, for an afternoon bout with Bethany Lutheran College. That event is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
