Lecheler's jumper in final seconds lifts Eagles over Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 13, 2008) --
Brian Lecheler (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford)'s (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) successful jump shot with 2.5 seconds left in the game gave Northwestern College a 76-74 nonconference victory over the Auggies from Augsburg College.  Down by four points at the half, the Eagles started the second period on an 8-0 run to put themselves back into contention before fighting hard to the end to earn the win.

Stephen Hanson (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha) (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half while Northwestern made 72.4 percent of its shots in the same 20 minutes en route to a 61.8 percent performance for the game.  Augsburg countered with a 52.7 percent rate, while both teams committed less than 10 turnovers.  Augsburg was nearly flawless, turning the ball over only five times in a game that featured 19 lead changes.

Lecheler finished with 13 points, while Mike Schramm (Roseville, Minn./Mounds View) (Roseville, Minn./Mounds View) scored a career-high 15 points for Northwestern in the win.  Jon Cassens kept the Eagles on their toes, scoring 19 points for Augsburg.

The Eagles improve to 6-2 (1-1 UMAC) with the win, while Augsburg falls to 4-4 overall.

Northwestern has one more game to play before Christmas break, as NCAA Division II opponent Concordia University-St. Paul will host the Eagles on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
