St. Scholastica hands Men's Hoops first loss

DULUTH, Minn. (Dec. 5, 2008) – The College of St. Scholastica handed Northwestern College its first loss of the season on Friday night, holding on to a 66-60 final score. The Saints led by eight at the end of the first half, but Northwestern was able to mount a successful comeback before losing a grip on the lead as the game came to a close.

NWC was able to put back 25 second-chance points, but 19 turnovers resulted in 17 points for St. Scholastica. Northwestern shot a combined 39.4 percent from the field, but wasn't able to make much from behind the three-point line, as evidenced by their 3 for 18 performance. The Eagles out-rebounded the Saints 45-24.

St. Scholastica wasn't able to make many shots from long distance either (1 for 12), but their 46.2 percent performance was enough to claim the victory.

Stephen Hanson (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha) (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) led all players with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Gabe Jefferson (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) chipped in nine points while Reid Berens (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Three players scored in double figures for St. Scholastica (3-3, 1-0 UMAC), including Jesse Taylor, who had 16 points.

Northwestern (4-1, 0-1 UMAC) will hit the hardwood again tomorrow, as they travel to Ashland, Wis. to take on Northland College. That game is set to tip off at 5 p.m.
